The Burnet High School team tennis squad played with tremendous effort when the Bulldogs and Lady Dawgs welcomed Salado Aug. 14 in District 25-4A play.

Though Salado ultimately won the head-to-head matchup 10-5, Burnet head coach Jayci Craig noted the Bulldogs and Lady Dawgs showed the fight and determination the athletic department is known for.

“The score does not reflect the growth and effort made by the Burnet Bulldogs, however,” she said. “There were several close matches that just did not finish the way we intended them to.”

A total of 19 team tennis matches are played. The team that wins 10 matches first wins the head to head and adds a slash mark in the district win column. By rule once a team captures 10, other matches that are playing, regardless of who is winning, immediately stop.

Seniors Callen Smith and Nick Dietrich and freshman Blake Haynes earned wins in singles, while Dietrich and Luke Suchomel, who is also a senior, won their doubles match. Alex Burns and Smith won their mixed doubles match.

Craig noted “the Burnet Bulldogs faced a competitive and difficult Salado team,” adding her players competed with all they have.

“While the final results were not what we hoped for, the growth and development of the Burnet tennis program is something to brag about,” she said. “Several athletes have made huge progress and gotten better over the course of the season. We are looking forward to watching their continued individual success as well as team success.”

Burnet welcomes Little River Academy at 4:15 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, in district play.

“We host Academy and are looking forward to gaining additional experience,” Craig said.
